U14 Juniors WIN at Rock 2013

Pendeen Pilot Gig Club took Avarack to the Rock Gig Club regatta at Daymar Bay on Sunday 2nd June. The weather and sea conditions were glorious enabling a great day of racing with 29 gigs present from as far away as Bristol.
Highlight of the day was the Under 14s race with a field of 9 gigs. From the start the Pendeen youngsters Joe, Jess, Josh, Stephen, Courtney and Sam, coxed by their coach Debbie Sedgeman, started to pull ahead leaving much of the pack far behind, finishing in a fantastic first place and raising their oars in triumph after crossing the line.
In the other races Pendeen also had very encouraging results. The first race the Ladies Veterans saw the club's crew recover from a disappointing start when the flag was dropped before all the gigs had reached the line, rowing strongly to finish 13th. The mens veterans crew also suffered the same problems on the start but recovered well to finish 9th.
The Ladies and mens B races were held in two heats due to the number of gigs present. The Pendeen ladies rowed an excellent race passing several gigs to finish 4th in their heat. The mens B crew including new rowers John and Dixie also had a good race finishing 8th in their heat.
The mens A was in contrast rowed in one large heat with the Pendeen crew rowing strongly to finish 14th. Overall the club was placed in 12th place for the event out of the 29 gigs present, a very positive result against some much bigger clubs.

U14 Tamar Lakes Championships 2014

U14 Plate Winners

Back Row: L-R: Sam, Lucus, Jess, Nathan, Charlotte

Front Row: L -R: Debbie (coach & cox), Courtney.

At this event our U14's won the Plate competition at the CPGA Championships held at Tamar Lakes.

We only formed our Junior section in June 2012 so to win a plate two years later was a brilliant achievement. All the crew were complete novices and had completed their first competitive season in 2013 with only an U14 crew, winning two event trophies.

In 2014 some of the previous years U14's moved up to U16 age group. The U16's crew also had a massive achievement this year by reaching the final of the CPGA championships at Newquay in August.

The juniors train on a Friday after school U14's @ 5pm and U16's @ 6pm at Newlyn harbour. The club always welcome children to come and have a go. Starting age is around 11 but as children grow differently the club set a presidency of them being able to manage/handle an oar by lifting and dropping the oar in & out of the pins.

We are very proud of our Juniors - Time for an Update Embarassed

Fridays    U14 @ 5pm and U16 @ 6pm.

Friday afternoon rowing has now begun to establish itself again, apart from one day with particularly bad weather, when we decided to cancel, and we look forward to more of last year's juniors returning.  A number of juniors have rowed through the winter on Sundays, which has given them time to strengthen their stroke, so we will be looking out for a good result at our race meeting. As Sunday rowing has been well attended, we would like to invite any juniors who have already rowed on Friday to come along for more practice at these social rowing sessions if they wish. It is important to remember that during the summer Friday, as stated above, is the 'Training' session and should therefore be given priority, but if for any reason this time is difficult please talk to a member of the club.

If you have any questions or queries please use the email facility on this page to contact the club.
