"Geevor" Day
On Sunday 9th February Pendeen Gig club launched their new wooden racing gig "Geevor", during the day events unfolded around Newlyn harbour before the members paraded the gig through Pendeen village on their way to Geevor mine cafe for refreshments.
Anna Murphy, a Pendeen Gig rower, wrote this tribute and read it out on the day of the christening;
New boat.
Fresh to water
Never met a wave,
Nor seen the wide yawn of the ocean,
May her heart, and ours,
Beat to the click click of oars.
May she enter many a race
With good grace
And win a few.
May young and old,
Woman, man and child,
Every condition of humanity,
Row in her,
And feel the breeze on their cheeks.
Welcome to this salty world Geevor
The RNLI in Newlyn kindly let us use their boathouse as a shelter where teas, coffees & hot soup were given out to the welcoming people gathering waiting for the vicar to arrive and bless the boat.
After the vicar blessed Geevor she took to the water for the first time with our Junior crew rowing the gig out in between Pendeen's two plastic training gigs and our other wooden racing gig Avarack.
The club saluted the new gig with the traditional winning pose of "oars up", Geevor rowed around the harbour with the other gigs following with the Newlyn RNLI escorting us around the harbour in a lovely tribute to our new gig. Thank you Newlyn RNLI.
A reception followed at "Geevor Mine" kindly put together by the mine's committee in honour of the gig being named after the famous landmark in Pendeen. The clubs members enjoyed some superb food & amazing views from the mines cafe, thank you Margaret from the cafe for the beautiful cake.
